I wanted to share a link to a great article today, one that explains why I am not concerned about a child who is not reading at 6, 7, 8 or 9. The debate is still a hot one, even in my own family circle, but I have too much experience with homeschooled children now to have any doubts that this child too will read...when he/she is ready, and then I will not be able to get their little head out of a book.
For now, play and imagination are alive and well. Here is the Waldorf rational behind the teaching of reading gradually and at a later age: http://blog.bellalunatoys.com/2011/waldorf-reading.html.

Another book that can save reading for generations to come, is this one: The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease.(page 2 on my Bookshelf for more info.) The gist of it: Read to your children, hours and hours whenever you can. Help them discover a love of literature and books by showing them how fun and interesting they are. Let them catch you reading and enjoying it. And don't sweat the age factor.
